Every once in a while, a book comes along that literally blows you away and doesn’t leave you. Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds is one of those books that have made a lasting impression on me and I find myself thinking about it almost on a daily basis. It was also my first experience with verse novels and had completely opened my heart to a whole new reading world I didn’t know I needed.
Thursday Quotables is the place to highlight a great quote, line, or passage discovered during your reading each week. Whether it’s something funny, startling, gut-wrenching, or just really beautifully written. Thursday Quotables is where my favorite lines will be, and you’re invited to join in! Created by Lisa, over at Bookshelf Fantasies, and joined in by, well, me!

It’s difficult to just pick a quote from this book; so instead I will share three verses that really stood out to me. Hopefully they’ll make you pick up the book yourself. I really, really recommend audio version because Jason Reynolds does an incredible job reading his own book!
IT’S SO HARD TO SAY,
Shawn’s dead.
Shawn’s dead.
Shawn’s dead.
So strange to say.
So sad.
But I guess not surprising, which I guess is even stranger,
and even more sadder.
UNCLE MARK PULLED ME IN
for a hug,
but how you
hug what’s haunting you?
BUCK LAUGHED, AND
laughter,
when it’s loud
and heavy
and aimed at you,
I think
can feel
as bad as
a bullet’s
bang.
For such a short book, it packs a solid punch and honestly will haunt you forever.
