How to pick a monthly TBR | Bookish Chit-Chat

Good evening everyone! I had a blast back at home in Estonia. Sadly we flew back earlier today and the holiday is now finished! We’re also pretty much at the end of April now and new month brings new challenges and new books to read, as always. I love to set myself a target of books to read. I pile them in my monthly to-be-read (TBR) and try to keep with it.

That’s not to say that I succeed every month. The number of unread books on my shelf is, nicely put, ridiculous. What’s worse it that I want to read them all right NOW and sometimes end up scrapping the original plan completely.

My advice would be to

  1. Pick books that you want to read.
  2. Don’t set yourself a target that’s difficult to meet (trust me, that’s just a downer really!)
  3. If you’re not sure what you’d like to read, check out Goodreads. There are SO MANY BOOKS, sometimes I think too many.
  4. If you have many unread books sitting on your self – make your own to-be-read jar. It’s fun and keeps your book choices varied throughout the month.

I previously shared how I made my TBR jar; it did help me pick the books that would perhaps otherwise be sitting on the shelf for another five years. The trouble is that I’m also a mood reader. If the jar picks a book that I’m in no mood to read then the whole list becomes a struggle. So I’ve learnt it’s better to alternate the way I choose my next month reads.

Quick spoiler alert to those who are waiting for April Wrap Up. My April’s pile was a complete mood pick and it’s been a great success! I’ve finished all but one of my choices (currently reading the last one), plus I managed to fit in a few more! I can’t wait to share my monthly wrap-up with you guys; it’s a goodun! (if I do say so myself)

How about you? Do you use a book jar, Goodreads list or simply go with how you feel on the day to pick you monthly TBR pile? How often do you end up ditching the original plan because another book has caught your eye?

  1. I love the idea of a TBR jar!. In 2017 and 2018, I read almost entirely from my Goodreads TBR, so I always had a list of what I’d be reading next. This year, I’ve been reading my way through two book challenges, which has been WAY more fun than I expected, along with introducing me to so many new authors. Between that and reading from my TBR (and TRYING to read books from my own shelves HAHAHAHAHahahaha *sob*), I never, ever wonder what I’m going to read next! (I’m also a planner by nature, I like to have everything planned out, so all of this has made me feel very in control of my reading life!)

I don’t often ditch books in favor of something else. It helps that I’m a fast reader and can go, “Okay, I’ll be done with this book in a day or two and then I’ll get to that one.” I’m hoping to tackle quite a bit from my Goodreads TBR this summer and I’m looking forward to it. 🙂

    1. I love a challenge! Which ones are you doing?

Lucky that you’re reading fast. It can take me anywhere between a whole day or a month to get through a book lol! Totally depends on what mood I’m in.

Love that you’re tackling your Goodreads TBR. I really need to as well. Too many unread books, I can’t handle this haha x
