We’re over half way through 2019 and I’ve completely smashed my Goodreads reading challenge already! It’s time to freak out about the books I’ve read so far and I’ve seen this tag around a lot in the last few weeks. I thought it’d be a great little tag to pick up and make into a yearly post. So, without further ado, here’s my first Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag.
Best book I’ve read so far in 2019
I have a few favourites this year, books I’d give more than 5 out of 5 stars. If I had to only choose one, it’d have to be Opposite of Always by Justin A. Reynolds. My review is available here, but long story short this book hit me right in the feels and I just loved Jack-Attack!
Best sequel I’ve read so far in 2019
I rarely read series; my go to genre is thriller and those books tend to be mostly stand-alones. I mean, the ones I’ve picked up this year. So for the best sequel (and arguably the only sequel I’ve read so far this year) I’m going to have to choose The Plea by Steve Cavanagh. It’s the second book from the Eddie Flynn series and I have not stopped talking about how much I love Eddie!
New release I haven’t read yet but want to
That’s easy – After the End by Clare Mackintosh. I have actually bought the audio book and started it and hope to get through it in July. I loved Mackintosh’s previous books and I am very keen to read it!
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year
One of my favourite books last year was The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris. Morris’ new book Cilka’s Journey, which is the sequel to the Tattooist of Auschwitz, is due to be released in October and I truly cannot wait for it to be published!
Biggest disappointment of the year so far
Does it count if I haven’t yet finished the book, but I was so excited to get my hands on it and read it? It’s JP Delaney’s The Perfect Wife. I’m only under 10 chapters in, but haven’t picked it up in the last three days. It’s fair to say it may be pulling me into a reading slump and it’s upsetting. The writing style is completely different to his other books I’ve read (and loved!). I cannot get onboard with the 2nd person narrative. I’m not sure if I want to continue with it, or if I should even finish it.
Biggest surprise of the year so far
This would be The Passengers by John Marrs. I only stumbled across it by accident when I was looking for an audio book that is narrated by my favourite narrator – Clare Corbett. I had no idea what the books was going to be about and was absolutely thrilled that it turned out to be a five star read!
New favourite author
I haven’t found a new favourite author yet. A lot of the books I own are by the very same authors I read last year.
Newest fictional crush
Slightly inappropriate, but it’ll be Jack from Opposite of Always. He’s a little too young for me, but he would make the cutest boyfriend!
Newest favourite character
Eleanor, from Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. I wish she existed in real life and I was her friend!
Book that made me cry
This rarely happens, so I haven’t cried because of a book so far this year. Unless it’s a based on a true story (like the Tattooist of Auschwitz) I’m very unlikely to shed a tear.. Cold and heartless – yes, I’ve heard that before!
Book that made me happy
Um…. thriller books rarely make me happy, but I guess that’s not what they’re here for.
Favourite book to film adaption of 2019
Okay, that would be the Pet Sematary by Stephen King. I loved both the book and the movie!
Favourite post I’ve done this year
I really can’t pick one post.
Most beautiful book I’ve bought this year
Does this mean the most beautiful cover or story?… I’m going for the cover. It would be The Corset by Laura Purcell.
What books do I need to read before the end of the year
I definitely want to read Cilka’s Journey when it gets published! I haven’t have got many new books on my list as I am trying to stay clear from buying more books before I get through my currently enormous TBR shelf (100 something books!). So I’m hoping to read a further 30 books from my TBR before the end of the year.
And that’s it folks! Hope you enjoyed this, and I tag all of you that have made it so far!
Let me know if you have different answers or if you in fact agree with mine 🙂
