Reading Challenge 2020 | March | The Ten Thousand Doors of January

Reading 12 in 12 in 2020 did really not get off to a good start. I did not finish the Ten Thousand Doors of January.

But first, isn’t the dust sleeve the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen? I must admit, this really was a cover purchase through and through!

Blurb: ACCORDING TO JANUARY SCALLER, THERE’S ONLY ONE WAY TO RUN AWAY FROM YOUR OWN STORY, AND THAT’S TO SNEAK INTO SOMEONE ELSE’S . .

In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr Locke, she feels little different from the artefacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored and utterly out of place.

But her quiet existence is shattered when she stumbles across a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure and danger. Each page reveals more impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

My thoughts: I did not continue with this book because
A) I was struggling with concentrating on any book
B) Although I could see why people like this book, and have rated it high, but where I was in my life at the time .. it was perhaps hitting too close to home. (ahem, January wanting to use the Doors to escape her situation 😩)
C) I do not like the book in a book trope
D) I will definitely try again

Maybe venturing out of my comfort zone wasn’t such a good idea after all? Magical Realism is definitely not one that has immediately caught my attention 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

  1. Aww, I’m really sorry you didn’t enjoy Ten Thousand Doors of January, it’s one of my favourite books! I am a huge fan of magical realism but I’ve also had the experience of reading a book that is outside of your comfort zone and just not enjoying it. Hopefully, your next book is a better read.

    1. Hey! Ah sucks when one of your favorite books does not gel well with someone else. The cover of the book is just so beautiful, I really wanted to love it just because of it!

What would be another good Magical Realism book I could try instead?
