When I discovered You on Netflix, I was all over it like a rash and binged the whole season in a day! Give me all things obsessive and I’m like “yep, sure, where do I sign?”. I ordered the book You by Caroline Kepnes halfway through the series and couldn’t wait to get into it. Slight spoiler alert – they are both good!
You – Caroline Kepnes

Blurb: When Guinevere Beck strides into the bookshop where Joe works, he is instantly smitten. And so begins an attraction that quickly spirals into a whirlwind of deadly consequences.
A chilling account of unrelenting, terrifying obsession, Caroline Kepnes’ You is a thriller more perversely clever and dangerously twisted than any you have ever read.
The only thing crueler than a cage so small that a bird can’t fly is a cage so large that a bird thinks it can fly.
My thoughts: I love books narrated in first person. There’s something so much more intimate about reading through someone’s point of view, rather than being told the story by a third person. Know what I mean? You is one of those, intimate type of books. And not because it’s raunchy.. fine, that too, but more so because it’s told by Joe himself. I couldn’t help but like him.. absolutely not condoning his behavior and the rest of the drama throughout, but imagine loving someone so much you’d do a n y t h i n g for them, even if it means… right??- no more spoilers!
To compare the series and the book itself, I am impressed with how true it stayed to the book. Of course they aren’t like for like and it was refreshing to see the different versions of events in a whole new light. Poor Peach, it doesn’t bode well for her in the book either..
I would also say that the book is a lot more sexual than the series. Found myself on the cringe train more than once!
All in all, I really enjoyed the book. Author’s writing style meant it read fast and kept me hooked from the very first line. (I also blame some of it on the fact I had Joe’s amazing voice in my head from the series.. gosh, what’s wrong with me?!)
4 out of 5 stars – Hidden Bodies is already waiting for it’s turn on the shelf. Cannot wait to see what Joe gets up to in the next book!
