Book Review | White Nights by Ann Cleeves (Shetland series #2)

Ohh, the time of the year White Night is set in reminds me of Estonia so much. I loved the summer nights when it never got dark and there were parties and BBQs and bonfire and friends and family and.. ahhh I miss home! In many ways Shetland reminds me of my home town, where everyone knows everyone and their business (minus the murders of course!). So yes, there is that..

Blurb: When Shetland detective Jimmy Perez finds a body in a hut used by fishermen it seems to be a straightforward case of suicide. He recognizes the victim – a stranger with amnesia who had disrupted a local party the night before his death.
Yet this is no desperate act of anguish, but the work of a cold and calculating killer. As Perez investigates, he finds himself mired in the hidden secrets of the small Biddista community. Then another body is found.
Perez knows he must break the cycle before another death occurs. But this is a crazy time of year when night blurs into day and nothing is quite as it seems . . .

My thoughts: So it has taken me over two months to actually write the review on White Nights. I was going through the biggest reading slump early December and I was busy with hosting my family in London, sightseeing around the city.. then Christmas happened.. and before I knew it – BOOM – it’s February!

Short summary:

  • It took me two attempts to get into it.
  • I still like Perez, Taylor not so much.
  • A pattern is forming with the person who finds the first body in Cleeves’ books.
  • I was kept guessing to the end about who the murderer was, but it wasn’t as surprising as Raven Black.
  • I enjoyed the book second time around.

I was upset with the ending, not only because I didn’t see it coming, but I was hoping the “bad guy” was someone else, just because I didn’t feel connected to that particular character! Lol

Anyway, a firm 4 out of 5 stars. Another brilliant book by Ann Cleeves, the Queen of mysteries.
