Book Review | The Defence by Steve Cavanagh

The Defence is the first book of the Eddie Flynn series. I picked it in high hopes it will get me back on track during the biggest reading slump, ever. If it wasn’t for the dreaded slump I would probably have got through this book in a day. It was that good!

I grew fond of Eddie Flynn in Th1rt3en and I was delighted to be reunited with him. Cavanagh did not disappoint, that’s for sure. This legal thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat from the very start.

“Members of the jury, it’s a pleasure to be here with you all. Ms Sullivan spoke today for around two hours. I will speak now for around two minutes.”

Eddie Flynn used to be a con artist. Then he became a lawyer. Turned out the two weren’t that different. With a ticking bomb strapped to his back, New York lawyer Eddie Flynn must defend the head of the Russian mafia in an impossible murder trial – and win – or the mafia will kill his ten-year-old daughter.

Using his razor-sharp wit and every con-artist trick in the book, can Eddie convince the jury of the impossible and save his daughter before time runs out?

Jesus Christ, Barry. What the hell are you doing? I’m wearing a bomb, was what I wanted to say.

All in all – it was what I had expected. A fast paced, nail biting, race against time with witty characters and an explosive ending (no pun intended!). A real page turner. Cavanagh really knows how to tell a brilliant story.

5 out of 5 stars.
