Book Review | The Passengers by John Marrs

One of my favourite June reads, hands down. Since I decided to start walking more, I’ve been listening to a number of audio books. I chose The Passengers purely based on the fact that I absolutely adore Clare Corbett’s voice, and since she’s one of the narrators it was a yes from me. I went into this book with my eyes closed and I regret nothing!

Blurb: When someone hacks into the systems of eight self-drive cars, their passengers are set on a fatal collision course. The passengers are- a TV star, a pregnant young woman, a disabled war hero, an abused wife fleeing her husband, an illegal immigrant, a husband and wife – and parents of two – who are travelling in separate vehicles and a suicidal man. Now the public have to judge who should survive but are the passengers all that they first seem?

My thoughts: I’m sure many of us are excited about the prospect of driverless cars in the future. The car industry is already testing out cars that are capable of starting, stopping and parking all by themselves with as little help from the actual driver.

The Passengers follows a group of carefully selected passengers, who’s cars are hijacked by a hacker and are set to collide with each other within two and a half hours. The whole ordeal is broadcasted to millions of horrified people watching it live on TV and following on social media.

Only one of the “participants” is to get out alive and it is down to the jury and the people to decide who deserves to live and who doesn’t.

I loved everything about this book. It was engaging, it was scary, it was thrilling and also showed the nasty side that is human nature in “pack mentality”.
