Book Review | The Shut Eye by Belinda Bauer

Oh, you know it’s time for another Belinda Bauer’s book review! I’ve raved about her since Snap (review here), and I liked both Blacklands and Rubbernecker. I find her writing really easy to follow and I can easily get lost in the stories she tells through all her books. The Shut Eye is no exception.

Blurb: Yesterday they were a family just like any other;
Anna and James, and their young son Daniel.
Then in one careless moment, everything changed.
A front door accidentally left ajar…and Daniel was gone.
But four-year-olds don’t just vanish into thin air.
Do they?

My thoughts: Isn’t it every parent’s worst nightmare- losing a child? But imagine your child goes missing from the safety of your own home, isn’t this even more horrendous?

The Shut Eye follows Anna, who’s four year old went missing when her husband accidentally left the front door open. She is struggling to come to terms with her loss, and finds it impossible to forgive James. At her wits’ end she visits a psychic seance hoping get some answers, any answers really. Following the visit with no further clarity where her Daniel is and being convinced it was all a hoax, Anna starts to see visions herself. Hoping that telling police about her visions will help find someone else, she meets detective Marvel.

John Marvel, a murder detective, soon begins to suspect little Daniel’s disappearance is connected to a cold case he was heavily involved with.

A race against time, supernatural visions and the strength of mother’s love is in the center of The Shut Eye. In the end I felt some questions were left unanswered but really, I did like it. I enjoyed the character development, I appreciated Anna’s journey to finding her son and I was entertained by the story.
