Book Review | Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

I had heard so much about Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman that it made me avoid it. It’s also not the type of book I’d normally pick up from a book store. When my colleague literally pushed the book in my hand to read it, I felt very apprehensive about it. It actually took me 4 months to pick it up from my shelf once I bought it home. I was scared that the book will not live up to the hype and I’ll be the only person on Earth who dislikes it.

Blurb: Eleanor Oliphant has learned how to survive – but not how to live
She leads a simple life. She wears the same clothes to work every day, eats the same meal deal for lunch every day and buys the same two bottles of vodka to drink every weekend. Eleanor Oliphant is happy. Nothing is missing from her carefully timetabled life. Except, sometimes, everything.
One simple act of kindness is about to shatter the walls Eleanor has built around herself.
Now she must learn how to navigate the world that everyone else seems to take for granted – whilst searching for the courage to face the dark corners she’s avoided all her life.
Change can be good. Change can be bad. But surely any change is better than… fine?

My thoughts: What actually happened is that I totally LOVED the book. This will be on my must read again shelf for sure. Having said that it did take me nearly two weeks to finish it. I felt the start of the book was a little slow for me, but it was necessary for character building. To understand Eleanor. To understand her circumstances.

I fell in love with the main character from the beginning though. She’s so witty; does not think before she speaks and is brutally honest.

I enjoyed Honeyman’s writing style, was very impressed by the delicate way she touched on loneliness and grief. I would happily read every other book she ever comes out with in the future.

5 out of 5 stars for this beautifully written, witty but emotional and touching story. I hope there’ll be a sequel because your girl needs to know what the future holds for Eleanor and Raymond. I’m totally shipping them!!

If there ever was a book I’d recommend to pick up during reading slump or a quick pick me up – this is it. I rarely laugh out loud when reading, but Eleanor made me chuckle multiple times.

Have you read it, what did you think? Do you think you’ll pick it up now?
